Drawn To Soulful Singers

"Who did you want to sound like when you were growing up, when you started singing?"

Johnny: I don't know if I wanted to sound like anybody. I knew I could sing, but I for the longest time I didn’t know ‘who I was’ as a singer. One of my earliest musical memories is standing on my piano bench at ten years old or so, trying to emulate everyone from The Ray Conniff Singers to Ray Charles (when I was alone in the house, of course!). I’ve always leaned toward more soulful music, so maybe if I dropped dead and got a second chance on this planet I’d come back sounding like Lou Rawls or Paul Carrack . . .
