"For your solo projects, what do you look for in a backup singer?"
Johnny: I consider the song. What's the genre? What’s the song’s attitude and the message in the lyrics? What’s the song itself ’telling me’ . . . 2, 3, or 4 part harmony? Large group choir? Then there’s the production side; who’s the lead singer, what’s their singing style, and what is she/he looking for in the song? So it’s complicated, but then again sometimes the choices are very obvious. Arranging and laying down BVs in the studio is by far one of my most favorite ‘tasks’ . . . BVs aren't the ‘cherry on top', but they’re certainly the ‘whipped cream’ . . .
